Fingathing X Groovement // 6DEC10

It's about bloody time we heard from FINGATHING aka SNEAKY and PETER PARKER (minus illustrator extraordinnaire CHRIS DRURY) - although Sneaky now lives in Berlin he'd been in Manchester for a bit to play a stonkin' live show at Matt & Phred's Jazz Club, so Groovement collared him and Peter Parker to come and play with toys and put a little podcast together.

Brand new album UNDEAD (working title) is due for release around April time, so here we have a couple of world exclusive previews from that in accompaniment to a lush selection from the lads.

Excuse the occasional crackle, Serato was being ridiculous.

Big plans are afoot for Phase Two of Groovement Radio, plans where Groovement can continue to support the thriving and inspirational music scene in Manchester and beyond, something which we would not have been able to do to our desired standard had we stuck within the restrictions of a proto-commercial FM licence. It also means we can bring the focus back onto Manchester at an international rather than solely local level, through podcasting.

For now, though, it’s back to basics.

Groovement: Qool DJ Marv (Buttamilk)

Groovement was blessed with the presence of Qool DJ Marv this session, after he flew in from New York to play at the launch of the new Trus’me album, In The Red, at Band on the Wall.

Marv has been playing the Friends and Family/Fat City parties in Manchester for many a year, even taking the vibe to New York for the Turntables on the Hudson party. Some interesting chat on his history with Manchester and his musical journey accompanies an impeccable choice of tunes for this podcast.

Qool DJ Marv is known worldwide for his unpretentious and open-armed approach to playing a set: have a listen to a grand list of mixes over at the Qool DJ Marv podcast site: www.djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com

Thank you Marv for jumping on board!

Groovement: Daedelus X Gaslamp Killer (Hoya Hoya takeover)

Well, well, well... a couple of weeks after joining us in the studio with Brackles, Daedelus returns to our humble Manchester studio with a special friend in tow in the form of the MotherFucking Gaslamp Killer.

Jonny Dub of Hoya Hoya kicks us off with some typical Hoya fatness before Daedelus digs out his UK purchases and spins us some scratchy vinyl. Gaslamp drops some ill and upfront shit from his iPhone while Illum Sphere gets a late train in to finish us off.

MONSTER of a show, and a direct result of Hoya KILLING it at the Warehouse Project the night before. The only way is up, gentlemen.

Big shout to promoter Pass The Feeling On for having the motivation and dedication to bring some real NY soul to Manchester. Check the blog at www.passthefeelingon.blogspot.com.

The podcast is topped and tailed by 'Jackson Avenue' and Stephanie's cover of Willie Mason's 'Oxygen' respectively, both from second long player TELL IT LIKE IT IS. Tracks playing under the interview are from debut MCKAY - track it down or find its AKA, TAKE ME OVER on iTunes.

Groovement: Ghostface Killah

Having been denied entry back in October when he came over to play at Riot Jazz, it was a pleasure to finally catch Ghostface on a Manc stage.

Following the show and preceding the groupies, Groovement shot the shit with the big D about the next album (which we know to be titled 'The Wizard of Poetry'), feeding kids and the London show...

Big shout to Chunky aka Hank del Chunkus, Manc host de Hit N Run mas famoso, who killed the MC contest on stage and came out victorious!

On hand to provide some perspective during the wait for Ghost were John and Maz from No Limits Hire, drivers extraordinnaire to the celebrity world.. check em out over at www.nolimitshire.co.uk, together with a video testimonial from Tony Starks himself.

The Ital Duke cut his teeth on the sounds of Reggae with Ska band The Frustrations back in Oxford, where he immersed himself in the heavy sounds of Jamaica's finest Dub and Reggae producers.

The Duke moved to Sheffield in 2007 and started in radio with the 'Dub Revolution' show (SureRadio) which blasted out reggae, dub, ska and conspiracy theories as and when they were needed (frequently).

He then began DJing under the title of 'The Ital Duke' around Sheffield and started the 'Ital Sounds' show (forgeradio.com), this time as himself - Ben Webster - in 2008, which serves up a hearty portion of Reggae, Dub and Ska with extra Dubstep, Hip-Hop, Soul and anything else Ital every Thursday evening.

Groovement hooked up with the Duke when he was spinning at one of the Colonel's legendary gigs in Sheffield, saw the fire in his eyes and got him on here! Enjoy...

Enjoy...

Despite being flu-ridden and frankly knackered mate, Jimmy was more than happy to shoot the shit with Groovement - also along for the ride were Gordon G, who heads up the Banana Klan label with Roots Manuva. Gibbs, he of the fold-away keyboard, and DJ Mr Cosmo provided the remaining ambience. Enjoy, this Groovement is both informative and pretty funny.

Omas has played on the same bill as a load of heads (I first heard him on the same bill as Public Enemy) and spins all over the North West, representing both AT LARGE and ATRIAL PHONIKS - look out for this lot coming into the studio when Unity Radio returns with its FM licence!

Kicking off with a breaks mix, Omas then brings us a hip hop mix he put together for Groovement back in Dec 2007.

Groovement: Roots Manuva Interview

This was a seriously bizarre night... after watching the RZA MC with his DJ Kevvy Kev to launch Futuresonic, with around 25 people present, Rich Reason and Jonny Dub led the way for us all to catch the one and only Roots Manuva at the Mint Lounge.

RZA and crew enjoyed the Mint Lounge veggie patties while the New Bohemia boys, who presented the night, sorted Groovement an interview with the man Rodney. Short but sweet, here'yare...

Thanks to New Bohemia for sorting the interview, and having the passion to put on events in the first place - www.myspace.com/newbohemia

Groovement: Marc Mac (4hero) Interview

Hoya:Hoya played host to Marc Mac this month... this man is a legend, a pioneer and bloody nice.

We find a quiet corner in Manchester's music box and chat sci fi, Visioneers, legacies and podomatic.

PS to those that asked... he hasn't got started on Battlestar Galactica yet but has definitely heard good things.

Big shout to Decoy, Ryan Hunn and Jonny Dub for sorting the interview!
